LOWDOWN
English singer/song-writer James Blunt releases All the Lost Souls which is his second full-length album. This album had high anticipation after great success with his chart-topping debut album Back to Bedlam featuring hit songs like You’re Beautiful. Blunt has been nominated for a Grammy and won two Brit Awards.
DIG
I was looking forward to what this lyrical mastermind would do on this new album but was disappointed. The majority of the music sounds identical to his first album and the lyrics aren’t much better. Admittedly, the lyrics for I’ll Take Everything are surprisingly enjoyable and almost Christian like with lyrics like Holy Spirit Rise in Me.’
Annie seems to be the total opposite of I’ll Take Everything. In the song lyrics Blunt promises to make a girl famous by singing a song about her and asks “will you go down on me?”
I found the majority of the songs on this album to go along with the same themes as Annie whether referring to certain parts of the female anatomy in slang or discussing drug addictions or other sexual acts.
The title track for this album is entitled 1973. Some say it has potential to be the next You’re Beautiful. I certainly hope not as this song revolves around the Ibiza, Spain club scene and a popular club there called Pacha which opened in 1973.
SPARK
- Why does sex seem to be such a prominent part of our society these days? Is this a good or bad thing?
- In what ways is this giant sexual revolution’ taking place through media (movies, TV, magazines, music)?
- How can you guard yourself from getting sucked in?
- If you have the album, what do you think about it? What’s your favourite song and why?
FINAL THOUGHTS
In my opinion, Blunt’s musical styles are not growing and his lyrical tone poems are more or less seedy and uninventive ways to discuss his sex life.
