When I first read this article title, my immediate thought was that it was about offering a holiday trip as a gift. So in the same way as a first anniversary trip to Venice would be a great romantic present, I wondered what holidays would be hellish? Maybe white water rafting for coach potatoes? Or a weekend break in the UK for sun seekers? Or how about a packaged holiday in Ibiza surrounded by loud teenagers and twenty-somethings for people who like culture?
However, on reflection, I think the article is probably more about the gifts that you buy, whilst on holiday, to bring back for loved ones. This is traditional and it’s very nice that we think of other people whilst we’re off having fun. However, it can be a cause of stress. What can we possibly get for granddad? How about mum and dad, and siblings? Sometimes we leave it to the last minute and then end up with just a very short amount of time to look for gifts. Hands up who has ended up buying their gifts in the airport on the way back, or in a tacky gift shop that specialises in novelty-related rubbish.
Of course, the key to finding a good gift is to consider what types of things the person you are buying for likes. What hobbies and interest have they got and do you know whether they might already have the item that you’re considering? Conversely, the worst gifts are usually where little or no thought has gone into what the person would like. Instead, you just pick up the most convenient or the cheapest item that you can find. Or you buy the same item that you always get them, even though they’re sick and tired of getting tea towels or humorous socks!
It’s very difficult to be specific about what the worst gifts are, as that will depend on the personality of the person you are buying for. Maybe your granny absolutely adores getting tea towels from around the globe and would be awfully upset if you diverted from the norm and brought her back some hand-crafted ornament. The key to avoiding disappointing the people that you’re buying for, however, is definitely to set aside some time to looking for gifts. To make this more fun, why not treat yourself to some gifts as well? If possible, it is nice to buy gifts that have been made in the country that you are visiting and that aren’t readily available in your home area. Hopefully by putting some thought, time and effort into your gift shopping, you will end up with gifts that will be really appreciated. And next time that your loved one is on holiday maybe it will prompt them into taking more time to finding you something special too!
